INUIT
Artist
The sculptures of Silas Kayakjuak burst with charming exuberance. He specializes in small pieces, little gems that exude feelings as much as subject matter. I have yet to see one that does not make me smile. The joyous drummer with drum and hands raised is without question the most expressive drum dancer I have ever seen. If in a bad mood, I look at it and feel better. The kid sliding on a sled is nothing less than the thrill of having a snow day away from school. The more pensive pieces, such as mother and daughter or child, or woman stargazing exude a peaceful pleasure, an acceptance, to accompany the joy of life in the other pieces. The Sednas and shaman remind me that all this happiness is part of the Inuit culture. Silas sculptures are true to the cliché that the best presents come in small packages!
